A STEP TOO FAR

A STEP TOO FAR

It is said that power corrupts, but actually it's more true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power.
David Brin

If there is one dynamic that sets this country apart from many of the others it is this: our government was created by the people to serve the people (not the other way around). The original leaders and framers of the constitution put in a series of safe guards, as well as certain checks and balances to insure that the government infrastructure would always be attendant to the will of the people.

Remember that most of the early settlers came here to escape religious and political repression. The last thing they wanted was an overly powerful central government. With this in mind the early patriots entrusted certain powers to the individual states, and only allowed the central government limited powers that were spelled out in detail. Under this system, all other powers were reverted to the state or individual.

Today we are witnessing unprecedented power being assumed by the Federal government and the executive branch. In my mind the government is leveraging the current economic and political unrest and fear to accumulate powers that it was never entitled to have. Greedy and power hungry politicians are passing legislation designed to increase their constituent’s dependency on them, thus perpetuating their power and positions. When all three branches of government are controlled by one party or interest group the danger of unchecked control is at its highest level.

I’ll tell you up front, that I have never been a political activist, but now its time to speak up or suffer the consequences. I for one do not like the direction that the country is heading, and I want my voice to be heard. The time for apathy is over, we need to speak out before we become slaves to our own government. Our inaction and apathy have caused us to relinquish our ideals.

I believe our country was built on the principles of freedom, personal choice, ownership of private property, and the individuals right to acquire wealth and dispose of it as he or she sees fit. Taxes and tariffs by the government are acceptable to pay for infrastructure and basic services, beyond that I don’t agree with using taxes as a means to redistribute wealth. Government does not create wealth, it only spends and redistributes wealth.

Why would we want to look to elected officials for our basic needs? In a word the government has been a terrible steward of existing national programs such as social security, Amtrak, Medicare, Farm subsidies, and others. I shudder to think of them with a controlling interest in Car makers, insurance companies, health care, and banks. I don’t want government putting salary caps on private citizens. Our dependence on the central government would rise to an all time high and their ability to control the citizens would be unprecedented.

Can you imagine a day where:

Government controlled Auto makers will only offer small, fuel efficient cars, that meet the standards of some government bureaucrat and not be driven by market demand or customer choice. By controlling production levels the boys in Washington could literally hinder your ability to travel.

Universal health care as administered by Uncle Sam, that would surely reduce the quality of our health care system to the level now “enjoyed” by England and Canada. Doctors and hospitals would be reduced to little more than government contract employees and some non health care professional would arbitrarily decide which operations and medicines we were entitled to and when. I can see a time where legislation (or punitive use taxes) could dictate the private citizen’s ability to smoke, drink, eat fattening food (or engage in other activities that the government deemed inappropriate). After all, an unhealthy lifestyle could place an unwelcome and cumbersome burden on the national free health care system. Once the single payer system is in place, we would almost have to leave the country to get elective health care. (Where are we to go…Canada ?)

Banks: Rather than let banks fail the government had stepped in and injected billions in bail out money, but with strings attached. The banks sucked up the bailout and Tarp money and just forgot to let it trickle down to millions of end users who were loosing their homes.

Social Security: The government has been fixing social security for 20 years now, and yet it is widely known that the entire program is in trouble and it is questionable if it will be sustainable for much longer, As far as I concerned they can keep my money and just stop collecting it from here on it. Another clear case of government ineptitude and meddling in people’s personal finances. It also highlights the central government’s inability to keep their hand out of the cookie jar. (or lock box..as Mr.Gore might say)

I guess, if I had to sum up my feelings on the matter, I want less government, not more. I want the freedom to succeed or fail on my own. I want to work hard and be able to enjoy the fruits of my labor. I don’t mind helping others, but I don’t want to be made to, by redistributing wealth. My goal would be to help the needy without dragging down, or presenting a disincentive for the self sufficient. The hair on the back of my neck stands up as legislation is being rushed thru in the middle of the night, often without review by the majority of our elected officials (not to mention the people)

We are now entering an era of unprecedented borrowing to pay for new programs, the burden of which will fall on the businesses and productive people in this country. At some point the debt will have to be re-paid. It’s easy to take stimulus checks and free programs but at what cost? As taxes are raised to an all time high, these people and business will loose the incentive to produce and melt back into the system, or move to another country to escape the financial oppression. I feel a difference of opinion is healthy, but that the country is now too divided.

Government and elected officials have their place, but left unchecked they tend to accumulate too much power. They adopt a mindset that they alone know what is good for the electorate, and set about to control the very lives of those that empowered them. History offers many examples of a government or leaders that were allowed to go unchecked. (in many cases they were granted, or assumed these extra powers to deal with a war or national emergency) Our freedoms and liberty took many years and many sacrifices to achieve, but they can be lost very quickly. I feel we are heading down that path right now, and must make a change before it goes…”A Step Too Far”.

Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.
Abraham Lincoln

WHEN TOO FEW DECIDE

WHEN TOO FEW DECIDE

It’s a cold day in October and I’m normally spending the month or so, in my winter home, in warmer climates. This week I was called back to the capital because the country is in a crisis, the Caribbean Crisis.. Tonight I’m working well into the night at my desk. I was deep in thought while reviewing the latest intelligence reports and surveillance pictures. My concentration was interrupted by a knock on my office door.
“Come”
I was met by a young sergeant with closely cropped hair.
“Sir, the president’s helicopter just landed outside, I will be back to alert you when they are ready”, Sir
He stood at formal attention using proper military protocol until I dismissed him with a salute. Good clean cut kid, I thought to myself. He will do well in the army. As he left, I just stared at the door for a moment, I found myself reminiscing back to the time when I was his age. Back then I was just as gun-ho, ready to make a name for myself. Things seemed so much simpler back then, I was so proud to serve my country. Now, over the course of 30 years I have worked my way up from the son of a factory worker to the highest ranking general in the Army. Only in this great country is such a thing possible.
Those were glorious days, and I fought with bravery and honor in many campaigns in foreign lands with my men. My responsibilities were great, but they were few. I thought of only my men, my country, and then myself. In those days I was at ease wearing my battle dress uniform and combat boots.
I must admit that over the years, life as a soldier and a commander has tempered my views. I have lost too much, and have resolved too few conflicts. I think that war both hardens and changes a man. Even the battles I thought I had won, now seem hollow when I consider the costs. Time and history have blurred the edges of what seemed so clear in the past. In years past I felt war was the final answer, the true resolution of any conflict. Now, after many battles, I know it to be a temporary solution at best.
Even today, after all these years, I still consider myself a simple soldier. I now sometimes fill the role of a diplomat or a politician, but I am really just an old soldier, doing his duty. Today I wear shiny shoes and a smart looking uniform, complete with so much brass and colored ribbons, but a part of me still wants to be back there fighting with my men. The decisions seemed so much clearer back then, I could trust my instincts. It was easy to tell who were your friends and who was your enemy.
But, I guess that work is for younger men and at my age I must serve where the country needs me. Instead of being out in the field I find myself in this office, deep beneath the streets of the capital. This is a place that few in the country will ever see or know about. Deep inside the bowels of this government building I work, signing papers and giving orders to men, I will never see.
Another knock at the door..“General”, they are ready for you now.” The council has voted and they are at a stale mate, they need your vote.
I sigh deeply as I get up from my desk and walk down the narrow hallway to the planning room. As I enter the room I stop and salute the men already gathered there. The president sits at the head of the table, right next to a few government leaders I don’t recognize. Also at the table is the head of the navy and air force. The mood is somber. I look briefly into each of their eyes, to determine which ones have voted for war and which ones have voted for diplomacy, but their faces are well practiced and hard, they give no clue.
After a few second s of silence the president quietly speaks. “Gentlemen, we are at the brink of war. You have all read the intelligence reports; I believe it is time we make a decision. No one wants war, our people do not want war, but we also can not afford to be perceived as weak. I don’t believe we can afford to be the ones to blink first; our national security and our pride is also at stake. As the greatest nation on the face of this earth and one of the last remaining super powers, it is our obligation to react to this situation. Our allies and the world are watching, our cause is true and just. We must send a clear message. We also must assume that our counterparts across the sea have already made their decision. Our troops, bombers, submarines, and missiles are all on standby, awaiting our decision. General, as commander of the Army, your vote will break the tie one way or the other.”
The room falls silent as I ponder the choice before me. Seconds tick by that feel like hours as I feel the weight of the decision I now must make. How strange that the fate our country and that of the world, has fallen on the back of a tired old solider. How can so few of us decide the fate of so many. Who would actually win a war when both sides have the capability to insure total mutual destruction?
“The men in this room have known me for many years. You know that I believe in dealing from a position of strength. I’m sure that most of you will assume that I will vote for war, but I am tired of war. Our country is great and I am a warrior, but there can be no valor or victory in this. By my estimation we could be only minutes or hours away from a nuclear catastrophe. This one time, let us trust in their humanity. Let history proclaim us as the greatest nation, the nation of peace. I vote we stand down and give diplomacy a chance. The world will know by our actions that we have prevented a nuclear war”

After a few moments of careful thought our leader had decided. “Then, it has been decided, Comrades. I wonder if the world will ever know just how close to the edge we came tonight. Hand me the Red Phone…Hello President Kennedy, this is President Khrushchev. We have decided, in the interest of peace, to immediately begin disassembling our military hardware on the island of Cuba and to stand down our forces, if you agree to do the same. We ask you guarantee the U.S. will not invade Cuba and that you remove your missiles near our border in Turkey.
Thank you Mr. President…we shall speak again soon.”

DEAR I.R.S.

DEAR I.R.S.
Dear I.R.S.

I know you guys are busy (especially this time of year), but I have some questions that are kind of bugging me and I was hoping you could help me out. Being a good American, I pride myself on knowing how our government works, so I decided that I had the weekend off, and what better time to read a copy of our tax code. I envisioned myself hunkered up on the couch with a good cup of coffee and a copy of that best seller. ( I heard it was a good read)

Well, I drove over to the local Books A Million and tried to buy a copy and they just kind’a laughed at me. The fell’a behind the counter actually had tears in his eyes. Anyway, I headed over to the library, figuring copies of books and stuff, is their deal. You may find this hard to believe, but the librarian gave me the same look of disbelief and went to laughing also (of course much more quietly than the other guy ..(I mean it is a library).

Not one to be easily dismayed, I went home and fired up the old computer. First I went to Amazon .com…I didn’t know what category to look under so I tried: Fiction, Drama, Comedy, and even Coffee Table Books (well, maybe if you had one hell of a large coffee table). I really didn’t have any luck there so I tried a few google searchs. I found the mystical document alluded to several times but I was not able to actually locate the document (and I’m not sure how long it would have taken me to down load that sucker, if I did find it). Now I’m thinking there must be a copy somewhere, encased in glass or something, and on display like the constitution or the Liberty Bell.

I was however able to find some articles about the (alleged) tax code. I knew it was a rather large document and I’ve heard from some accountants and tax lawyers that it’s actual a real blockbuster. I’ve also heard it’s rather “wordy” with some sources indicating that it may exceed some 67,000 pages. (that makes it longer than the bible) Now, I love to read as much as the next man, but I’d have to take a 3 year sabbatical to pour thru that kind of novel.

Its seems to me that there can’t be too many guys like me that would have the time or smarts to really understand the “ins and outs” of the tax code (maybe I can get the cheat notes , or tax code for Dummy’s version). In fact, I understand that Americans waste some 6.2 billion hours just filling out their tax returns ( Is that more hours than Mcdonald’s has sold hamburgers?), at a cost in lost productivity exceeding 300 billion. ( I need an editor to fact check that for me, but at this point my creative staff is pushed to its limits).

I keep hearing about tax reform in Congress, but from what I can see the tax code has only gotten more bloated and complex. Honestly now, how many people can really get their arms around a law that far out of control ? The code has been added to and band-aided for years, it was a scant 400 pages back in 1913 (too hard to understand, even back then)

Listen, there is no question in my mind that the government has the “need and right” to collect taxes and I whole heartedly agree with them ( hear that guys..this is my fine print disclaimer. By the way feel free to stop by the house anytime for a nice dish of pasta… Love you guys) By all accounts, the system works for them, as they collect over 1.5 trillion (I love the way that word just rolls off the tongue) dollars annually in tax revenue. If It makes you feel any better, the government does a damn good job of spending every dollar of it ( and then some ..Special thanks to the Chinese and everyone else buying up our debt) Hey, they really need all that money, and where else can they get it from. It’s not like they can just turn on the printing presses and print some ( uhhh. On second thought ..maybe that’s not the best analogy in this case) . As a side note: the government could try spending less, but that’s never going to happen.

Alright, just so you realize I’m not just a complainer here are a few alternatives.

One: Discontinue the entire collection of income taxes ( Note: probably wont work,,but I thought I’d swing for the fences on this one)

Two: Move to a Flat tax: everyone pays a tax at the point of purchase. It would be administered just like a state sales tax. Based on the principle that people with money tend to spend money, and people with lots of money, tend to spend lots of money. It places the burden of collection on business owners (who have a lot to loose by not being 100% accurate and honest in their collections and reporting) No complicated paperwork, and very hard to cheat on. Also, its very inclusive because Americans are spenders.

Three: Leave the current system in place but institute a tax incentive to move the economy in the right direction. For instance: If a consumer (A.K.A. taxpayer) buys or spends in a target economic area he/she gets a tax credit. For instance, if the taxpayer buys an American car, opens a savings account, eats at an Italian restaurant (I am a little self serving here), or invests in heavy equipment made in the good old U.S., they get an offsetting tax credit against any income tax they owe. There is a loss of tax revenue from the individual, however the business or targeted entity receives new revenues that are taxable.

Four: We discontinue the tax code and have all the I.R.S. agents standing out front of department and grocery stores with a red kettle on a tripod, and ringing a little bell for donations. (or selling boxes of thin mint cookies)

I hope all you I.R.S. guys realize that I’m just trying to help out here…If your not happy about this article please contact me at poorfrenchboy@writer in exile.com . All others can write me at pooritalianboy@gmail.com

HOW TO REBUILD AMERICA

HOW TO REBUILD AMERICA
“One Brick at a Time”

If you read my previous article: “The Demise of America”, you realize that I believe our country has taken a wrong turn. In many cases, America is in a state of decline, both economically, politically, and morally. I feel that to begin our recovery, we need to first acknowledge our mistakes and misdeeds.

I love this country and I know we can reverse the damage we have done, however, we must begin the process in earnest and we must begin now. It’s important that we do not underestimate the size and complexity of the job we have before us, nor the amount of commitment and effort that will be required. This rebuilding initiative will be a monumental task, accomplished “one brick at a time”.

This task is too important to leave solely to our elected officials. To propel our country to new heights of greatness will require a grass roots effort by all Americans. The job is simply too big for the congress or even the president to tackle alone. I think president Obama, would welcome the help and support of all Americans. In addition, we need to make our elected officials painfully aware that nothing, short of their full attention and cooperation on this effort will be acceptable

As I mentioned, there is a lot of work to be done on many fronts, but here is my

Top Ten “starter” list:
(in no particular order)

Partisan politics: This country was founded on Political debate and tolerance for different points of view. My concern is that the constituents are so divided on most issues that it’s hard to get a consensus. The two party system seems to have drifted to the far left and far right, leaving the centrist to choose between the best of two evils. Sometimes, after an election, I get the feeling that the names have changed, and the balance of power has shifted, but that we are in for more of the same. We may need a solid Third party to offer some balance (maybe the “freedom party”)

Welfare state: Government is not our surrogate mother. I believe in helping people in need, not creating a needy class of people. Our government can not, and should not, be responsible for cradle to grave care for otherwise self sufficient people.

Immigration: America, is truly the great melting pot, Immigration has made us strong. But, today we have people who are entering the country for the wrong reasons or illegally. These un- documented immigrants are undermining our economy and our security, as well as bringing in once controlled or eradicated diseases. Although many of these individuals just want to work and share in our wealth, others are penetrating our borders to do us harm. In short, we need to control our borders.

Economic foundation/Jobs: We have to fix our ailing economy before we can work on some of the other needs. America’s free trade economy is the engine that drives our country forward. When our economy is healthy it creates jobs, strengthens the dollar, and helps provide increased tax money to run the government. The vast majority of Americans are motivated, hard working individuals. They don’t want a handout, they want honest work. We need to reward American and foreign companies for creating jobs that can be filled with American workers.

Bail outs/ no more: What ever side of this bailout business you land on, the banks, car manufacturers, brokerage firms, and insurance agencies, need to know, after this “you are on your own”. Business must succeed or fail on the merits of their own efforts, and with their own capital. The American people will not be there to offer you a soft landing again.

War/ division: If and when America goes to war we need to be 100% sure it’s the only alternative and then we must stand united, behind our troops. There are real fundamental differences and threats in the world for us to be concerned about, any one of which could threaten our national interest and cause us to go to war or be attacked. Iran/Middle east/Israel, Korea, and others, all represent a real and present danger, we can’t ignore these realities or close our eyes to them.
As far as I’m concerned..It’s “ All in or All Out”. War is not the issue for politicians to play political poker with (and we better not let them). Let me repeat, war is a terrible, but sometimes necessary option. We should only exercise that option after all other options have been exhausted and then only to protect ourselves and our vital interests. However, if we do need to go to war, we need to do so to win it and get out.

Put America First: It’s important to be a good world citizen and it’s nice to help others, but let’s get our own house in order first. I’m not advocating that we turn our back on our friends, but put our needs first. We have a responsibility to our own citizens that surpasses that of our neighbors.

Energy Independence: We need to drill & reward alternates energy development: Drilling may have some sort term environmental downside, but so will a nuclear attack on us. The cost to our economy and national security out weigh other concerns. As a side note here, we also need to reduce our foreign debt dependence, much like reliance on foreign energy; it also makes us indebted and subservient to other nations

Build a bridge: It’s a small world, and we are only one player. We no longer wield the same economic and political clout we once had. Let’s drop the arrogance and begin building better relations with other countries (both economic and political)

Home land security: In short: “Beef it Up” ..Our citizens need to understand that we can’t stop every threat from getting thru. We must stop some before they start, and that can only be done with better intel, at home and abroad. As president Bush has repeatedly said: “we have to be right every time, and they only have to be right once” Forget the other items on this list if we can’t control this one. Because without homeland security its, none of the above may be possible, its game over.

It’s been said that freedom was never free, there is a cost. Other generations have paid the price to make America safe, to make America strong, and now it’s our turn. The election may be over but the hard work has just begun. Let’s bring back American pride and unity, like right after 9/11. Let’s begin to rebuild America “Brick by Brick”. We can make her stronger and better than ever.

BREAKAWAY REPUBLIC

BREAKAWAY REPUBLIC

“Love it or leave it”…..The same advise I’d give you about your wife or your country.
Anyway, I got to thinking about this whole thing when Alex Baldwin, Cher, and a bunch of other actors began saying that, if their candidate didn’t get elected they would just as soon leave the country. I mean, these guys have a ton of money and they can pretty much live like a king anywhere they decide to go, but what about the rest of us. (we have feelings too, right ?)

Come to think of it, I’m not too excited about my property taxes, and I would have liked a bigger refund from I.R.S. last year, so what’s my remedy? This got me thinking about the whole idea of creating a breakaway republic. Just like the former Russian states, Czechoslovakia, and countless others, we could just part ways with the rest of the country. I could start a new utopia, a place where government served the people. ( a place with no taxes) A group of like -minded people could all create their own little country (kind’a like Monaco) and not have to toe the party line. It would be great, only people who thought and voted just like me would be allowed.

Since I live in Florida, that would be perfect.( I wouldn’t even have to move, or learn a new language) So, I drew up a petition for the State of Florida to secede from the Union. The sunshine state could easily stand alone. In fact, we could require a passport and charge an entry fee to every one driving in from Michigan, New York, and Canada. So, I drove around the state trying to get 500,000 signatures, to show the Feds I meant business. After a month or so,(and a lot of gas money) I decided to kind’a put that idea on the back burner. The concept was good, and I met a lot of nice people, but I fell a few signatures short ( about 499,998 to be exact...many thanks to the fellow sleeping under the bridge in Fort Myers)

Ok, I guess the whole Florida thing is off the table for now, so I focused my attention on the next most logical alternative. I rented a boat over in Fort Lauderdale and took a little cruise over to the Bahamas’. I was greeted there with great fan fair and after buying a straw hat and getting my hair braided at the dock, I spent the rest of the day talking to local officials. It turns out they are doing fine and really don’t want any more obnoxious Americans on their island. (Unless they come over by cruise boat and leave by 4pm each day).

Not one to be easily discouraged, I immediately went to my back up plan. Maybe I could rent some space from our neighbors to the north. (they have a bunch of space they are not using). The Canadians liked the idea (but said not to send anymore draft dodgers, or medical marijuana users their way) and offered to trade me equal space if I would throw the state of Florida into the deal, (because half of their citizens have a second home there anyway). I felt the deal was a little too rich for my liking, so I thanked them (had a few Molson’s, took in a hockey game) and left.

To be honest, I was kind of running out of ideas, until I took a little trip south of the border. Just south of the Rio Grand was the perfect spot, and the Mexican government couldn’t have been happier. I was offered a 99 year lease on a tract as big as Arizona, that we jointly decided to name “Tex-Mex”. It was only after I carefully read the fine terms of the lease that killed the deal. The wanted me to construct a giant wall along the entire southern border of the newly formed state, to keep the new residents from border jumping into Mexico. They also said they wanted to reclaim the land, any infrastructure or improvements, and have me throw in the State of Texas when the lease expired. (what’s fair is fair)

Well, after a lot of thought and soul search, I’ve decided that maybe it’s just going to be easier to work within the system that we already have in place. I may not agree with every politician that comes to power, and every new law that is put on the books; but after looking at the alternatives, we really have it pretty good here.

THE DEMISE OF AMERICA

THE DEMISE OF AMERICA

OK, let me start off by saying that I love this country. I have wanted to write this article for a while, but held off until now. I remained silent in fear that others would see me as anti-American, or somehow less than patriotic, nothing could be father from the truth. America has been the greatest country and social experiment in history. I could easily recount the epic battles and milestones that this country has survived and overcome, but things have changed. It is time for Americans with courage to speak up and take action. We need to put aside partisan politics and do what’s right for our country.

There will be those among you who after reading this will consider me a pessimist, a naysayer, or even worse. I can only say that the truth is sometimes painful. The greater danger, the real disservice to my country, would be for me to bury my head in the sand and keep waiving the flag, while uttering pleasantries about times gone by. I have written many articles expounding on my patriotism and love for these United States, but now my duty lies in illuminating the not so subtle signs of our demise. Without action by well meaning citizens, and if left un-checked; we will spiral downward. Freedom was never free, it takes action, it takes vigilance and commitment; it must be nurtured.

For those of you who won’t open your eyes, for those of you that don’t believe we have headed down a slippery slope; keep your head in the sand, go over a read a blog about Paris Hilton or the Easter Bunny. Let me be blunt, America is in a state of decay, both economically, socially, morally, and in the eyes of other world leaders. Our citizens are deeply divided on many issues. If we continue down this path, we will be nothing more than a hollow shell, a paper tiger, a third world nation. Military might alone does not make a nation right or great. We do not need to follow this path.

History is replete with the demise of great world powers that had risen to power and splendor, only to waste away from the inside. Yes, I said from the inside, not by military defeat, not by natural disaster, but by loss of resolve and cohesion. Great Britton, China, Germany, The Soviet Union, and Rome have all given up their dominant positions in the endless ebb and tide of World Power. Most of them had turned their backs on their faith, had over extended their sphere of power and their military, and many had overspent their budgets (sound familiar?) In general, these once great nations moved away from the principles, concepts, and core believes, that once made them great.

The fall from greatness is seldom a rapid plunge, but is often a more insidious descent down a slippery slope of failed policies, false pride, inaction, and misdeeds. In many cases the populace becomes complacent and allows leaders and politicians to go unchecked. They stand quietly by and comply with or acquiesce to, actions taken by the government that move the country in the wrong direction.

Allow me to use a metaphor to illustrate my point:

Imagine America as a great fortress on a hill. This fortress that we call America, has been our home and kept us safe for a long time, it has been like a shining beacon to the rest of the world, it has allowed us to grow and prosper. The founders of our country were the original architects and engineers. Their need was great, their blueprint was sound. The plans were well considered and laid out, the foundation was strong. The builders were careful to avoid the haste and missteps taken by failed architects from other times and other lands. Over the years many a brave and insightful man has given much and lent a hand in building this great fortress, and many, too many, have given there life’s to insure its strength. This dream was created carefully, brick by brick to be the greatest shinning example the world has ever known.

Over time, new generations were handed the keys to this great fortress, but they did not labor and toil over its construction. They did not fully recognize or appreciate the blood and sacrifices of those that came before them. These same people have not given weight to the service and loss of life that some of their own generation, willingly gave, to insure the future of the fortress. Over time, the mighty fortress on the hill fell into disrepair, yet the citizens could not see the gradual changes. The fortress is strong and will always be there, they thought. Besides, we are too busy with our businesses and daily life to attend to these minor things.

Everyone can see what is happening, but it’s like taking down a great building one brick at a time. Some of the bricks are taken away one at a time by the town’s people with no ill intent. Maybe they just need a brick or two for their own homes. They feel they deserve a brick or two, after all they are citizens, or maybe they have intentions of replacing the borrowed brick one day. Can anyone fault them for that? Then there is another group that hates America, and wants us to fail, they are also silently chipping away in the shadows at the great wall, brick by brick. They realize that a sudden frontal attack on the fortress would fail, but few will notice if they chip away inch by inch.

It’s strange because surely the people who loved this magnificent creation would revolt, if the building was subject to the sudden attack of a wreaking ball, but this method is much more subtle, more sinister and insidious. Like a thief in the night, each brick disappears with hardly a notice (its only one brick, hardly cause for alarm, the politicians would answer. The fortress is still strong, do not worry) The masses do not even notice, and the few astute observers that do, are ignored, ridiculed or silenced. On a daily basis the building still looks sound and strong. How can the loss of a single brick affect the strength and structure of such a massive building? Brick by brick, day by day, almost unnoticeably, the fortress weakens, and over time it’s strength and foundation are under minded and the once great structure collapses. Where once stood a monument to its creators now stands a structure in need of repair.

I believe we have taken a giant step backwards in several key areas: (to continue my analogy)

Economics: We lost a brick when we let our steel manufacturing business go under, we lost a brick when we let our automobile industry become a second class player (and now on the verge of bankruptcy). And now more damage when the American dollar and American credit are in doubt and decline around the world.

Oil: We chipped away at our fortress when cut back domestic oil production, we did not invest in new refineries, and let trumped up environmental concerns keep us from drilling in the Gulf and ANWR. As a result we became almost totally energy independent on foreign sources.

Laws: We weakened the mortar when we allowed some of our civil liberties to be watered down

Politics: When deeply divided we weakened our foundation. It harms us to elect self serving and inefficient politicians into office, that vote down party lines; right or wrong. (these guys negate the vote of the true civil servants)

World community: We destabilize our structure when we let much of the world doubt our word, our resolve and strength.

Moral decay: We can undermine our entire base when we forget that this country was established with a belief in God.

America is still the only place I would want to live. I love this country but can no longer stand quietly by, because we have real problems that need to be addressed. Can we come out of it, can we return to greatness, can we turn this great ship around? Can we once again become the shining example for the rest of the world to follow? I submit to you that it depends on each of us. I ask you to make a personal decision: Are you going to be vigilant, working at the front gate of our fortress? Will you pledge your efforts and add a brick to rebuild and strengthen our country. Or will you join those in the shadows who would see us fail, or thru apathy, take another brick away ?

If you agree, disagree, or if you have a solution write me at: pooritalianboy@gmail.com . I’d like to include your ideas, when I write my article on “How to Rebuild America”

WHO REALLY WON ?

WHO REALLY WON ?

DATELINE: NOVEMBER 5TH 2008
“A house divided against itself, cannot not stand” … Abraham Lincoln

Finally the long awaited election is over. After 24 months and countless millions spent, we have a new president elect. To be honest, I try to stay away from politically charged articles on my blog because they tend to polarize people. But in this case I think the damage is already done. So, at the risk of being politically incorrect and insensitive, and possibly pissing off half of my readers..Here I go.
I’m not sure if the recent election served to help unite us, or just to further highlight the vast and deepening division that exists between American values and ideals. To be honest, I wasn’t that enthused with either candidate. Were these two guys really the best, and brightest, America had to offer ?
I can’t help but wonder what percentage of the voters, truly expressed their heartfelt endorsement of the candidate, and what percent cast their vote, only as a protest and to show distance to the last president’s policies. Even worse, how many voted for one candidate because they just didn’t want the other guy as president. (a default endorsement)
Personally, I think it’s important for America not to be driven too far to the left or the right. I also don’t find it healthy for one party to have an over whelming majority in the top offices. (President, congress, senate..it tends to drown out descent and opposing views) For my part, If a politician with an opposing view from mine gets in office, I have learned to grin and bear it. The truth is, as much as I may doubt the experience or capabilities of a candidate, I have rarely questioned their patriotism.
I’ve heard a lot about the word “Change” during this election. It seems, everyone is anxious for some change. I will be interested to see if this is little more than a campaign slogan, that will soon be left by the wayside, or an attempt at meaningful and positive change. Remember, all change is not good change. For the most part it’s easy to talk about change and promise change, but when the full weight, responsibility, and reality of the decision is at hand, sometimes change gets put on hold or is compromised.
Especially in regards to Iraq, I will be interested to see just what changes are actually made. Nobody wants to lose another single man over there, but to pack up and walk out immediately, would be strategic and logistical military blunder. Again, the reality of the situation might require a much more measured approach and timeline. The merits of the war can be argued, but the retreat from it must be a prudent and well planned military decision, not the result of keeping a rash campaign promise. War is not the answer to every world problem, but unfortunately when it is the answer, sometimes it’s the only answer. We need the wisdom and the courage to know when it is politically expedient and when it is unavoidable. I also feel that sometimes it must be pro-active. Hope is not a defense.
I also think we may have to re-think the whole 2 party political system and election process in this country, it’s too divisive. I think the majority of Americans are sick of this. Sick of the name calling, sick of the sound bites, and pre-programmed talking points, sick of daily reports by pollsters’ telling us who is in the lead, and tired of the “anything to win attitude”. I’m not sure we can stand another reversal of election results due to hanging chads or another popular vs. electoral college nightmare. My feeling is that the best possible candidates that the United States has to offer, are avoiding the job, they just don’t want to go thru the mud slinging and personal attacks. They can make much more money in the private sector and don’t have to endure making their lives, and those of their families, an open book.
We need a more inclusive system, and a much shorter election process, where we don’t end up with 50% of the population as being winners and 50% being losers. We need a change of mindset for those who always vote right down party lines from president to dog catcher. It’s been years since the country has stood strongly together behind a major politician or decision. We are too divided as a nation. It should not take a major catastrophe for us to come together as Americans. I want politicians to put America first, “all of America”, not their respective parties.

America is a great country, but we cannot rest on past accomplishments. Each generation faces its own challenges, and we are facing ours. I believe our best days are still ahead of us, but the path will not be an easy one, and there are many trials and tribulations in store for us. For the first time, in a long time, we have our hands full both at home and overseas. I’m confident the economic crisis will work its way thru the cycle after some more painful adjustments, but we are less in control of what other countries might do.
Let’s face it, there are people and countries out there that despise our way of life and mean us harm. To believe otherwise is unrealistic and naïve. Yes we can talk to them, yes we can negotiate, but it should be from a position of strength. I for one, do not want anyone mistaking our political bickering, partisan politics and infighting, for weakness or lack of unity. We should not let anyone doubt the resolve or cohesion of the American people, and to be honest, right now we are throwing off mixed signals.
At the end of the day, I’m kind glad that this only happens once every 4 years. I want to see the election decided by the people, not by the judges, lawyers, courts, media, or the best fund raisers. Our system may not be perfect, and it certainly needs some changes, but when it works right, it’s the citizens “who really win”.

LETTERS FROM A POOR ITALIAN BOY

LETTERS FROM A POOR ITALIAN BOY

LETTER#1: The Bailout

Dear Mr. President: This week, I watched with great interest and dismay as the congress passed a bailout law for many of the large banks, insurance companies, and financial institutions this week. (along with the tax relief bill for makers of wooden arrows) You have to forgive me, because I’m not as worldly as you and your friends in Washington. (and I actually work for a living) So, please help me out here with a few items I just don’t understand.

The way I see it, these big financial guys are some greedy bastards. They suck up huge windfall profits when times are good and come crying with their hands out when things go wrong. They made bad decisions, wrote bad loans, based on bad appraisals, and leveraged both themselves and the average home owner to the point of no return. They forgot about prudent lending practices because the money was coming in so quick, that they needed to get “their share”. And aren’t these the same suit wearing and calculator thumping bankers that would charge a borrower exorbitant interest rates and punitive penalties, if he was ever a day late on a payment ? The same guys that would tow a man’s work truck away if he missed a monthly payment, and lecture him on basic economics.

Ok, so here is where I really need your help understanding…..Now, all of a sudden these “Wonders of Wall Street” have gotten in over their heads and suddenly its up to Joe Six Pack and the rest of the American Tax payers (and our grandchildren) to help “Bail” them out ? (with our hard earned tax dollars)..because it will be good for the country…

Well, I sure don’t see the logic in that move but, if that’s the way the game is played, I’d like to ask for a little bail-out for myself. You see, I don’t have any money in my account, because I spent it all on booze, wild women, and alimony payments, and now I’m broke. (I wouldn’t bother you, if I had just wasted the money). I have a stack of “final notice” letters on the kitchen table that would choke a horse, the fridge is empty, I’m out of beer and cigarettes, and the bill collectors are ringing the phone off the hook and knocking my door down. Not only that, but it’s costing me half my paycheck just to fill up the old pick up truck, cauz gas is over $4.00 a gallon.

Being that you guy’s all saw fit to bail-out the big boys to the tune of almost a trillion dollars, then I figured you’d be more than happy to send a little cash my way. I went thru the problem of adding up my bills (I can provide a copy of the adding machine tape, if needed), and figure if you just send me $142,562.57 I can sneak by for a while. Once I get the money, I’ll be sure to recommend your services to all my friends that own small businesses and that can not make payroll. They can all use a bailout also. Remember, tax payers are people too.

Ps: Please send cash (In Unmarked Bills) directly to my home, because I just can’t trust those flim-flam man bankers anymore. I have included a self addressed return envelope, and I even sprung for the stamp.

NEWSWORTHY PART 1

NEWS WORTHY PART 1

Today is my 80th birthday and I’m sitting here alone, in my home office. As I look about me, my surroundings tell the story of my life. This morning I’ve been reminiscing over all the awards, pictures, souvenirs, autographed keepsakes, and mementos, and even my Pulitzer prize achieved in over thirty years of my professional journalistic career. Yet out of all my accomplishments, one stands out the most vividly in my mind. One single framed and now faded newspaper article has defined my career. Although it was written many years ago, I can remember it, as if it was yesterday. Here is my story:

I Hardly slept at all that night, hundreds of questions kept running thru my mind. I’VE GOT TO BE THE LUCKIEST BASTARD alive. My editor still can’t believe it. I guess being in the right place at the right time is half of success.

My boss sent me down to the federal courthouse yesterday to get some background information on the big Labell trial. So, here I am down there with about 25 other news people, proudly displaying my newly issued press credentials and a total of 3 weeks field experience.

My instructions were to take a few pictures, and gather some background info on the case, maybe interview a few minor players. To be honest I felt a little outclassed in the presence of the top reporters for CNN, Fox, and the network news correspondence. Yet I was pumped up because this was my first real story to cover and it was big news.

The place was a buzz with activity, reporters, journalists, T.V. cameras and high security. This was the first time that a seated congressmen was indicted for treason. And this was no ordinary representative, this was the senior congressmen from New Jersey. He has been re-elected 4 times and is the head of the prestigious armed services committee. Richard Labell was a high profile politician, and had been on the short list for Vice president in the last election. Labell had also just returned from a top secret visit to Iran, where he met with key officials in an effort to defuse a possible U.S. military action against that country.

Of course the congressmen and his press secretary adamantly denied his involvement in any criminal activities, and had already released several memo’s to the press to substantiate this fact. This could be a very hi-profile long drawn out investigation and trail, the kind that sells newspapers.

Nothing specific had been scheduled for today, but we decided to get involved in the case from the very onset. Having called the congressmen’s office ahead of time, I knew they had not planned a press conference following today’s preliminary hearing. That’s probably why my boss decided to send his most junior reporter to cover today’s activities. The assignment may have seemed a waste of time to our long term correspondents, but I considered today’s assignment a privilege and an opportunity.

Judging by the way the police were pushing the crowd back, I figured that the good Congressmen was about to head out of the court house and down the majestic steps. All the reporters and cameramen were lined up on both sides of the stairs, to get the best coverage as he made his way down to street level.

I knew I didn’t have a chance of even asking a question, being that the make shift reception line was three people deep on both sides. I looked down towards the road and noticed a limo creeping towards the cordoned off parking space right in front of the courthouse. I headed down there and set up shop, right outside the passenger curbside door. The sun roof was opening and I could hear someone yelling from inside the limo. I’m sure I heard… “and I’m not about to let the congressman take this kind of heat for you or anyone else. This kind of scandal could cost you the election. Just remember ..Loyalty is a two way street”

As the congressmen approached, I could hear the repeated chant of : “ No comment, No comment”. It wasn’t long before his security team noticed my proximity to the car and started motioning me away. I explained that I was with the media and just wanted to ask a few questions. As I raised my camera to snap a few photos I felt myself being thrown violently against the side of the car, my face mashed against the window.

I’m not sure if it was sympathy, concern, or fear of making a bad matter worse but suddenly the door of the limo was opened and the occupant invited me inside. Almost without thinking I obediently climbed in and sat down, blood still flowing from my nose. Seconds latter the Congressmen, who witnessed the whole thing entered the car right behind me.

Sorry if my security boys were a little rough on you. Cant’ be too careful these days.” He handed me his handkerchief and went on to tell me his side of the story as the limo raced away. I could tell that the information he was giving me was carefully scripted and rehearsed. I was cautioned not to take any pictures and I honored their request. The meeting was brief but courteous and the limo dropped me off a dozen blocks latter, in the center of town.

Before I called a cab to take me back to work, I stopped at the Starbucks on the corner for a cup of coffee and took some time to gather my thoughts and take careful notes of our short conversation.

NEWSWORTHY PART 2

NEWSWORTHY PART 2

I honestly didn’t have a lot of information, but I now had more than the rest of the press had, and that would make my boss happy. The congressmen told me that he was innocent of all allegations and that he felt certain the truth would come out at the trial. I pushed for more information and he cited national security interests as the reason he could not answer. He did make a point of saying that he would not allow his, or anyone else’s best interest, to supersede the best interest of our country.

The very next morning, I bought a dozen copies of our paper, my very first article appeared on page 3. I was very complimentary to LaBell and related the information he gave me in a positive way. I tried to call his office, to get a follow up on the article, but they did not return my call.

Several weeks went by and the case wore on. The press, for the most part, had moved on to more current and pressing issues, as they are prone to do. The new headlines included: an affair by a Governor, the continued decline in the economy, and the steady march to war between the U.S. and Iran. The Iranians were posturing for war, and would not back down. The Pentagon was careful to make its case to the American people that the Iranians were ready to use weapons of mass destruction against Israel. U.S. troops were being rushed to the region and war seemed inevitable.

Not to re-live past successes, but my mind kept going back to the events leading up to my big interview. It was like someone threw a light switch. The congressmen was enjoying unprecedented popularity and good press. He had been regularly doing all the top Sunday morning news shows, and was being scouted by several presidential hopefuls as a V.P. pick again at the next election. Most notably, he had just that week returned from an important trip to the middle east.

My journalists instincts were still being developed, but something inside of me, decided to follow a hunch. That afternoon I left a message at the congressmen’s Washington office that I had information regarding his recent trip and that I planned to publish that info. I would give him 24 hours to meet with me again to discuss his side of the story.

Within hours the same black limo was waiting for me down by the front doors of our offices. This time the Congressmen was alone and seemed much less composed, in fact, he was sweating profusely. He told me about his trip to the middle east, where he met with Irainian leaders. They made it clear that they would back down on there demands and move their troops off the border, but they did not want to look weak in the eyes of their neighbors and the world.

He told me that upon returning to the United States he met privately with the president and relayed their message. The president told him that he had already authorized an attack and was not about to change his plans. Besides the presidents poll ratings had been going down and he felt the people wanted him to stand tall. The congressmen told me that he spent over an hour trying to dissuade the president, to no avail. In fact, he was told that if he mentioned anything about his trip, the president would accuse him of breaching national security and turn the justice department pitbulls loose on him.

The country was heading to war and thousands on both sided would die. It was a war that could be easily avoided. The congressmen was torn between his duty to the president and what he knew was the right thing to do. We talked for about 45 minutes before the limo abruptly stopped again and left me off on the other side of the city. I was concerned about the congressmen’s state of mind, but I had my story.

The next morning’s edition proudly displayed my first cover story. “President Marches U.S. to Avoidable War”. Of course, the story caused an avalanche of press and investigations. In the following days, the U.S. posture on the war reversed itself, and the country returned from the brink of war. The pressure and embarrassment caused the president to resign and sadly, my friend the congressmen shot himself, shortly thereafter.

That one article, now a faded memory on my wall, started my career as a newsmen, averted a war, unseated a president, and lead to the untimely death of a very good man.

IF I WERE KING

IF I WERE KING

Listen, I don’t care who gets elected for president this time around. Frankly neither of the choices appeal to me, and it’s gotten to the point where neither party accurately represents my views or ideals.

Well you might ask, then, what’s your solution to this whole issue of “who will govern”. So. I’ve given the matter a lot of thought and came up with an idea that I should be “King of the World”. Since it probably wouldn’t be an elected position, then I see no need to explain my platform, and very bluntly I wouldn’t need to say or do anything to get your vote or approval. And don’t expect any hanging chads, or me to pull a sword out of a stone or anything. I’d probably just leak the coronation news to CNN or Larry King and let them run with it.

Still, being King of the World would be a very big role, and I’d really want people to like me, so I do my best to keep everyone happy. (if it didn’t interfere too much with my Kingly wishes, that is). I really don’t think I’d need a White House, Castle, Royal Palace or anything, I mean those things cost a lot of bucks.. I could probably set a good example and just run the world from my home office ( I wonder if IRS would let that qualify as a home office deduction ?, well then again it wouldn’t matter much, because I’d be getting rid of those bastards on day numero uno.

I guess the position would require a great deal of travel, I mean, I wouldn’t want any country to feel slighted and not get a royal visit. (note to self: call the Pope and see if he can rent me out the Pope Mobile when he is not using it). I guess I would need my own jet, I mean the president has his own jet, John Travolta has his own jet, and even Obama has his own jet and he isn’t even king of the world (yet). So, since I saved some money on the home office deal, I think the least I deserve is my own jet.. “Palace One” perhaps. (at least I could travel first class for a change..and not have to pay $7.50 for one of those little bottles of liquor)

Alright, let’s get down to serious matters. Ask what I can do for the people (and I’m not campaigning here, because I’m assuming I’ve already been awarded the position.) First of all I will eliminate all of the large, wasteful and otherwise corrupt government agencies worldwide, and replace them with my own somewhat smaller but equally wasteful and corrupt government. Second: I will cut intrusive income taxes, fees, fines, tariffs, customs, duties, levys, assessments and other government collection of funds from its constituents.(after all, now everyone just has to keep me “fat and happy” and not a bunch of other “public servants” worldwide.) Third: I will disband all the armies because now everyone is working to protect my best interests and not any local or national best interest. Just the money we will save on bombs and armaments will feed everyone that is hungry. (plus 10% off the top for my royal bank account ..hey a guy’s gott’a make a liv’in. Who knows how long this “King” job will last for). Maybe I’ll unite the world under one world language ..”Italian”……alright, ok, how about….Spanish….and I’ll send everyone a free C.D. from Rosetta Stone. (along with an autographed picture of me, in my King outfit…)

So now with all the wars stopped, everyone eating well, and prosperous. I can sit back and enjoy the office of “king”. Don’t worry I can handle it. I really don’t think I will let the whole “Your Majesty thing” go to my head. I’d like to think that it won’t even change me much, except maybe for the 20 maidens throwing rose pedals everywhere I walk, the young princess pealing grapes for me, the jewel laden crown and scepter, those guys with the big fans, and the royal food tester. Of course this could ruin my reputation as the “poor Italian boy” , but hey, sometimes ya just gotta make a few sacrifices….Its the whole, “the good of the many, is more important than the good of the one” thing. Somebody’s gott’a do it, and I drew the short straw.

I plan on visiting all the countries big and small but I think I’ll pick Hawaii for my main residence (and maybe Crawford Texas, for my summer home..plus Both places have hosted royalty in the past). Hawaii seems kind of centrally located and for a sun and fun loving monarch like me, it’s a better choice than say Iceland..

Anyway, as you can see the world would be a better place with me as King…so, don’t just sit there ..Get the word out..

THE WAR NO ONE WANTS

THE WAR NO ONE WANTS

(Author’s note: No matter what side of this issue you fall on, no one wants this war. However, the story below represents a “likely” scenario.)

We’ve been training out in the desert for 6 months now. Boredom and monotony are punctuated with urgent and realistic drills. They never really tell us if we are being called into action or is this just another training maneuver. I really can’t complain because I volunteered for this mission. We were told at the start that our success would be vital for the survival of my people.

Over and over, we have practiced negotiating the desert terrain in almost complete darkness, training for a mission we all hoped would never be put into action. Our role was to make a stealthy entry into enemy territory and locate key defense fortifications, determine troop strength, locate weapons production facilities, and missile sites.

Today, we are called into readiness and told, “this is not a drill”. I take a short helicopter ride back to Tel Aviv for an important briefing. It seems our intelligence people (among the best in the world) have conclusive evidence that the Iranians are now producing nuclear weapons. They have been allowed to continue their nuclear development program under the guise that it was for peaceful use in power generation. Now, even the passive and largely inept Nuclear Regulatory Committee has acknowledged that the Iranian program is very suspect.

The Israeli people do not want war, we are a peaceful people, however, our tiny nation is surrounded by countries that choose to deny us our very existence. The rhetoric lately has reached a feverish pitch, as leaders of foreign governments swear to “wipe us off the map” or “push us into the sea”. These are threats that we do not take lightly. Our history dictates that we face these threats or suffer unacceptable consequences. If these madmen are allowed to develop and posses nuclear weapons, our chances of defending our nation are seriously compromised. I hope the rest of the world understands that waiting is a risk we can not afford to take.

Several times in the past we have acted preemptively and aggressively against foreign powers, when we felt our national security was at stake. A small country like Israel can not afford to rely on a purely defensive posture. In our preemptive strikes against Iraq and Syria, we risked the wrath of global opinion and condemnation. Fortunately we consider global opinion a distant second to national security in our planning. Afterward diplomats from many countries, even those that are friendly to us, were speaking out against our actions. The truth is, that many of those same foreign leaders knew of our actions in advance, and secretly aided us in our efforts. I asked myself if the other world powers would turn against us if we act first again this time, but I console myself with the fact that I am just a soldier. The protection of my country and my people are paramount to me.

In any case, the prime minister has determined that we must strike first and we must strike now. It has also been determined that my small group of IDF special forces will be the tip of the spear, we are to ordered to be ready to deploy within 24 hours. It is made known to me that the Americans have knowledge of our plan and will “turn their back” and open a land and air corridor thru the Iraqi territory that they occupy for our planes and troops.

Because of our history of “first attack”, our targets have been hardened and our adversaries are on alert for our possible attack. The facilities we are going after have been embedded deep in the earth, covered by tons of concrete and protected by batteries of anti aircraft instillations. We are also faced with the formidable task of simultaneously taking out several production facilities scattered about the country. Logistically, this is much more distant and difficult than our previously successful missions. Fortunately we already have operators and agents on the ground providing us valuable real time intelligence. Every day we wait to react now, only lessens our chance of success.

Our goal will be to so damage these facilities as to negate their ability to produce weapon grade material, and set back their progress a dozen years or so. Unfortunately, now that this horrible technology exists, we can no longer “put the genie back in the bottle”

I am told that our government has authorized the use of force, using any and all means at our disposal to accomplish this mission. That is military speak for all out war and even the use of the terrible weapons that our country has at it’s disposal. This was not a decision that was made lightly, and we are all convinced that our success is a matter of national survival.

Our military has been war planning for this strike for several years now, but we have delayed taking action. We have waited at the urging of the United States, and have pursued every diplomatic channel. Many say we have waited too long. We have run thru every possible variation of the attack, carefully weighing the effects on both Israel and the entire Middle East.

Our planners were 100% correct in assuming that the Syrians would not retaliate after we bombed their secret Korean inspired nuclear facility in the desert, in fact they quietly buried the remains to hide them from satellite view. We have no such delusions this time around. For starters Iran has one of the largest and most well equipped armies in the world, and we consider a counter attack eminent.

A counter attack would immediately escalate the incident into an all out regional war. We are confident that we would face missile strikes and troop incursions on at least two fronts. We anticipate that Syrians, and their clients Hamas and Hezbollah would quickly join the battle. We feel confident that the U.S. would then be forced into the battle, despite being seriously over extended in Iran and Afghanistan. American troops in Iraq would be overrun by both Iranian troops and rebels sympathetic to the Iranian cause thought the region. There is also a high likelihood that other more moderate Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia, and Egypt would be under great pressure to join the cause of their Muslim brothers, and if they did not act, face a possible uprising by their own people. It’s possible that even some previously Russian countries could be drawn in, due to economic and military interests in Iran.

In short we feel this war would be the greatest threat to the existence of our people and our nation that we have ever faced. Faced with overwhelming odds, we would almost certainly have to use our weapons of last resort, including those that we have historically denied as ever possessing. As a lowly solider I do not know the extent of our weapons stockpile, but it is generally acknowledged as now exceeding even the capabilities of the British. We also have land based, and sea based delivery platforms, as well as the very formidable Israeli air force option.

Our estimates show that we could lose almost a million Israeli soldiers and citizens in such a strike and counter strike scenario, offset by enemy losses numbering almost 20 million. There is no question that this battle will be of Biblical proportions.

The time is at hand, I can only hope and pray for a last minute diplomatic solution, or that our enemies will find their potential losses too high a price to pay. As for myself and every Israeli, we will gladly give our lives as many of our brave countrymen thru out history have done before us, to insure the life of our country. I pray that, God, once again will allow us to defeat our adversaries.

CHANGE IS IN THE AIR

CHANGE IS IN THE AIR
For all the bad news on the world wide political scene, I think some good news may be on the horizon. Yes, political change is in the air. Just like the chain of events that lead to the eventual breakup of the old U.S.S.R. , I feel we are on the brink of change in several areas of the world.
Some change cannot be brought about by a wishful foreign government, or weapons. Some change must come by waiting and from within, especially in very restrictive countries where descent and the will of the people are suppressed (often brutally). In many cases this undercurrent will run just below the surface for years, even decades, before erupting.
One of the problems is that repressive governments tend to shelter and suppress the dissident news and events that happen internally. The brave students and patriots that speak and act out against these dictatorships often put their very lives on the line. As a world observer you have to read past the state approved headlines, party spin, and edited stories. You also must assume that our CIA is lending financial support to these dissidents, when it’s to the best interest of the United States. I clearly see the seeds of Freedom beginning to grow in Taiwan, China, Iran, and closest to home Cuba.
The subject of Cuba is an important one to me. Especially being a Floridian, with the island of Cuba, a scant 90 miles from our shores. I remember in my lifetime the Cuban missile crisis, the Mariel boat lift, and the ill fated Bay of Pigs. The Cuban’s that have made our country their home, have contributed their skills, their passions, and their sense of family.(not to mention their food and cigar skills in Tampa’s Ybor city)
The U.S. has had a long a varied relationship with the people of Cuba. It’s also unusual that we actual have a U.S. base on the island, despite our limited formal diplomatic relations. The military base is an anomaly, brought about by a 1903 treaty granting the U.S. a perpetual lease for the land at Guantanamo Bay, to be used as a Naval Coaling Station (don’t think we have any coal driven Navel ships anymore).
At one time before the corrupt but sympathetic Cuban leader Batista was taken out of power by Castro’s revolution, the U.S. had many interests in the island. Many American industrialists like the Hershey (yes, the guy with the chocolate company) had substantial homes and plantations on the island. They also made significant investments into the infrastructure on the island. These were the hay days of Cuba, when it enjoyed trade, tourism, and its businesses, nightclubs, cigars, and casinos, were among the world’s best.
The Cuban leader Castro has clung to power, thru the administrations of several U.S. presidents, since his ouster of Batista in 1959 as still remains in a position to call the shots even though he handed power to his aging brother in February of 2008.
I think the time is ripe in Cuba and other areas of the world for a historic change. I welcome the opportunity for ourselves and the wonder people of Cuba. Of course only time will tell.
