THE PRESIDENT
I’m fascinated with the whole presidential election process. Committees, conventions, delegates, super delegates (my delegate can beat up your delegate), fund raisers, caucuses, primaries, town hall meetings, and the grand daddy of them all, the general election. You have the state vote, the popular vote, awarding of delegates, and proportioning of delegates. You have red states, blue states, swing states, liberal states, and conservative states. Not to mention industrial states, farm belt states, and then there is always New Hampshire. (I still don’t get that one). There’s groups like the young republicans (does that mean, I can’t join ?), the grass root movements, and the Libertarians. And don’t forget Ralph Nader (can’t he take a hint)..
Hundreds of millions are spent on T.V. ads, radio ads, smear campaigns, and setting up miniature campaign offices in most counties and cities. Babies are kissed, hands are shaken, debates take place, speeches are made, and promises are made and broken. They set dates, have debates. And even pick running mates. There’s a long list, short list, but there’s never one they can’t resist. There’s fund raisers, don’t be late..after all it’s a thousand a plate.
For some reason they call it a race, but it takes forever. Maybe they should call it a jog, or a long walk. They go out on the campaign trail, but seem to spend a lot of time on private jets. Then there is the news coverage, pundants, reporters, pollsters, correspondents, Sunday morning round table shows, and talk show hosts (both for and against) Of course you have endorsements, acknowledgements, rebuttals, and denials. Both parties say they have a big tent, but sometimes it’s much more like a circus.
The candidates will say that they are conservative or liberal, except when they are fiscally conservative and socially liberal, or the other way around. They may be from the far left, or the far right, unless they are left leaning or right leaning. They are for taxes but won’t raise them, or against taxes, but would raise them under certain circumstances (after all, they may have to run for re-election). They will stand by their word and their record, except when it doesn’t suit them, at which time they must have been taken out of context.
There are even special words that you only hear around election time like: gravitas, hanging chads, A 527 a group like swift boats, margins of error, absentee ballots, reapportion, planks and platforms. Not to mention:, stump, bunting, talking points, electoral college (is that a public school ?) and exit polls
I don’t know, I get confused….I’m not sure my little vote is very important any more..In fact.... I think I’ve been “disenfranchised”. ??
Until Latter
